The Submerging temple of Mahadev in Kavi Kamboi, Gujarat

Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as the Submerging temple is one of the most unusual Shiva shrines in India.

Situated in Kavi Kamboi, Gujarat, this 150 year old Shiva Shrine is flanked by the Arabian Sea on one side and the Bay of Cambay on the other. According to Kumarika khand in Skand Purana, this Shivling was established by Bhagwan Kartik after he killed Tarkasur. What makes this Shivlingam unique is that it can be seen only during low-tide hours. At high tide, it totally disappears, thus earning the name 'disappearing temple of Mahadev'.

A Shivling Established by Lord Kartikeya Himself

  • Mention in Skanda Purana

Skanda Purana, one of 18 Hindu puranas, has references to this temple. After slaying Tarkasur, Tarakasur asked the Gods that how will be absolve himself of the sin of killing a devotee of Lord Shiv. Lord Vishnu consoled him-'Killing a wicked person, who nourishes himself on the blood of innocent people, is not a sinful deed. But, still, if you feel guilty, the best way to atone for your sin is establish Shiva lingas and worship them with deep devotion.'

Kartikeya installed these Shivalingas at three different places with proper rituals in the presence of Maa Parvati and all other Gods. Stambeshwar is one of the three shrines where these Shiv lings were established.

What’s Unusual about this Holy Temple:

Mother Nature herself does ‘Jal Abhishekh’ of this 150 year old Shiv lingam everyday. It is a awe-inspiring sight when the temple disappears in the shimmering waves of Arabian Sea. It's said the submerging and resurfacing of the temple from the depth of the sea restores positive energy in the minds of the devotees. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore creates a sense of harmony and being close to nature and Lord Shiva. After visiting the shrine, everyone feels blessed.
